World-renowned ethnomusicologist, Dr. Rosina Schlenker, continues her mesmerizing exploration of the music of the Indian caste system in this recording from 1973. The history of Indian culture is determined by the caste system which gradually developed since the invasion of the Aryans, the "nobly-born". Particularly in the lower castes, there is great poverty among the simple workmen, servants and peasants. Their music is characterized by simple melodies and rhythms and is sometimes dramatized by transvestite dancers.
